Scream 4 ad

I really like this advert as i think it has been very cleverly put together. The Scream mask is well known by many as the films have been going around for so long, even those who had not watched film, like myself, still knew the iconic mask. The mask has been used in comedy with the likes of Scary Movie, a spoof based on the film Scream, however, this advert brings back the horror feel originally associated with the mask.

As it is a horror i think the way they have incorporated a sharp knife in to the image brings home the fear people should feel as he is a dangerous person, well his a murderer! It is relevant as th film is a horror and it reflects the cruel and unpleasant events to come for the victims in the film. The blade looks cold and sharp, the gleam it has to it shows it would cause real damage which reflects the gory outcomes for the victims and that is what people go to see horrors for. They go to be scared, frightened for the adrenaline rush, also some people like it when films are gory, myself, less blood the better, but that is just personal preference.

The black background highlights the mask and keeps the focus on it so our attention is drawn to it. The black background also reflects the horror genre as black is a cold, dark color and arguably, unsafe. When the lights are out or when it is dark outside, you are not in control of your surroundings. There is a stronger sense of being unsafe as you do not know what is going on, or who is there either can others to help you if something goes wrong therefore i believe that black is a very appropriate and effective color to use for the background.

The line "New Decade. New Rules" is a very clever line as it reflects a new approach to Scream. As it has been around for so long many are familiar with it which is reflected in the "New Decade" part. Parents as well as teenagers may take an interest in the film. "New Rules" reflects the theme that runs throughout the movies, that it is a game that the victims follow. It also comes in to my mind that new rules means new rules to be broken, which signifies conflict. And the idea of the killings being a game shows just how unstable the killer is mentally, also the fact that he is killing in general shows him begin unstable.

The line is at the top and in small, this is so we are first drawn to the image and title, then the line as the image and title will give context for the audiences. The use of red signifies blood, again highlighting that it is a horror.

There is not a lot giving away about the film on this advert but it is very effective for promoting the film and leaving the audience intrigued and wanting to know more.
